Trafford Head Teacher Questionnaire - School Streets
Overview
A School Street is a timed road closure where motorised traffic is restricted on one or more roads outside of a school at school drop-off and pick-up times. The aim is to create an appealing, child-friendly environment, where road space is reallocated to make it easier for people to walk and cycle to school and air quality is improved.
Currently in Greater Manchester, over a third of primary schools are affected by poor air quality, contributed to significantly by motor vehicle emissions. Only 45 per cent of children are achieving an average of 60 minutes physical activity a day and childhood obesity is higher than the national average and doubles while at primary school. School streets aim to positively affect these figures.
