Overview

This survey is part of our research to find out which term people in Trafford believe should be used to describe people’s ethnicity. We are asking you because Central Government has advised all public bodies to stop using the term Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) and to adopt the term Ethnic Minorities as the appropriate collective term instead.

In order to make sure that we are meeting the needs of our communities, the Council has to write reports that help to create strategies to address inequalities. It is integral to this process that the Council understands the experiences of people from many different ethnicities and how we can meet their needs. While we work hard to celebrate individual identity and heritage, and encourage people to self-describe where possible, at times a collective term will be used. We would like to know which of these terms feels right for our residents. 

Why your views matter

While we recognise it is difficult for many people to agree on the best term to use, we would like to know your thoughts and feelings on what terms would be acceptable and appropriate. Also, we recognise that terms that describe our ethnic identity is a sensitive issue so your views matter to us.

We will use the results of this survey to help us determine an acceptable and appropriate term to use in our future documents and publications.
