Talbot Road / Warwick Road Junction upgrade engagement
Overview
Proposed Upgrades for the Talbot Road / Warwick Road Junction
Trafford Council is proposing to upgrade the junction where Talbot Road, Warwick Road, and Brian Statham Way meet.
This project aims to improve safety and connectivity for everyone using this strategic area, particularly those walking, wheeling, and cycling, both for everyday use and during events.
We’d really like to hear what you think as your feedback will help us shape the final design of the scheme.
Why is this upgrade needed?
- Safety & Continuity: This is currently the only major junction on the Stretford Cycleway that has not been modernised. Upgrading it will remove a "missing link" in the route, creating a safer, continuous path for cyclists.
- Event Management: The junction experiences very high footfall during match days at Old Trafford football and cricket stadiums. The new design will better manage these crowds.
- Supporting Development: The project aligns with local regeneration plans, including the new Lumina Village and the Civic Quarter Action Plan.
Key Features of the Proposal
- CYCLOPS Junction: Implementation of a "Cycle Optimised Protected Signals" design, which physically separates pedestrians and cyclists from motor vehicles at the crossing.
- Improved Footways: Pavements will be widened in key areas, such as in front of the UA92 campus, to provide more space for pedestrians.
- New Traffic Flow: Brian Statham Way is proposed to become one-way (exit only) towards the junction to reduce through-traffic.
- Dedicated Cycle Lanes: New raised cycle lanes and contraflow lanes (allowing cycling against the one-way traffic) will ensure cyclists can move safely and easily through the area.
- Bollards: Hydraulic bollards may be installed to manage vehicle access, particularly during events, allowing the area to be safely pedestrianised on match days.

Why your views matter
We’d really like to hear what you think.
The engagement period runs from Monday 18th May to Sunday 7th June 2026.
You’ll be asked a few short questions to let us know your thoughts. Once the consultation has closed, all responses will be carefully reviewed and used to inform the final design. A summary of the findings will also be published so you can see the outcome.
Hard copies of this form can be found and posted in the ballot box at the Library area of the Trafford Town Hall: Talbot Road, Stretford, Manchester, M32 0TH.
What happens next
Thank you for providing your feedback on the proposals.
Once the consultation has closed on Sunday 7th June, all the feedback received will be analysed and considered to help shape the final proposals.
If you would like to keep up to date with the progress of the project, updates will be posted on the webpage (see below).
